Methodology
How School’s Out! verifies school closures, what verification status means, how often data refreshes, and how anyone can correct an error.
How we verify school closures
Every closure on School’s Out! starts as “pending” when it lands in our system — whether from a calendar PDF, a school office email, a parent submission, or an automated source like the federal-holiday calendar.
A human reviewer cross-references the official school communication — the calendar PDF on the school’s website, a printed copy sent home, a direct email from the school office, or a recent district announcement — before marking the closure “verified.”
Sources are recorded per closure so any reader can ask us where a date came from.
What verification status means
Verified: a human reviewer has checked the closure against an official source and the page reflects the current published date.
Pending: the row has been ingested but a human has not yet confirmed it. We surface pending dates only when a school’s page is otherwise empty, with a clear label.
Tentative: the school itself flagged the date as preliminary (e.g. a contingent make-up day). Tentative dates carry the original source’s caveat.
Refresh cadence
A weekly automated link-checker re-fetches each school’s calendar URL and flags any 404, redirect chain, or content-length anomaly for human review.
Mid-year revisions trigger immediate re-verification. For example, when Miami-Dade County Public Schools published a revised 2025-2026 calendar on 6/10/2025, School’s Out! mirrored the changes within 48 hours.
A full-corpus manual audit happens quarterly. The most recent corrections are listed at /corrections.
Correction process
A public corrections changelog is published at /corrections. It lists the last 50 acknowledged corrections in reverse-chronological order.
Anyone can report an error. Email corrections@schoolsout.net or use the submission form on the affected school’s page.
Typical acknowledgement window: within 24 hours. Typical resolution window: within 48 hours.
What we do not do
We do not fabricate dates or status. When data is missing, the page is marked as such and we say so explicitly.
We do not auto-publish AI-parsed calendar data without admin review. AI assists; humans approve.
We do not track or store information about children. School’s Out! accounts are for parents and camp operators only — see /privacy for the COPPA posture.
